Carpetpaul said: "Is the .com extension just for 'profit making' business, ie commercial sites ? --------I want to make a personal 'non-profit' making site but don't want to have it associated with a country ie '.co.uk'
any ideas ?"
edwin said: "the .com does mean "commercial" but none of the tld-naming things have ever been that strict (except for .edu).
but technically you should use .org for a non-profit."
quinny said: ".com i would say is the easiest to get and most commonly used by everyone
here in ireland there are certain guildlines you need in order to get a .ie domain and i would imagine much the same in other counties
anyway go for .com if you want"
mark said: "I would imagine dot com would be the hardest to get - meaning that most names would be registered at dot com first and then dot net dot org etc... A lot of people who want a web site would generally go for dot com first and then works out from there.
First find the name you want and then run through a domain name search and see if it has been taken, if it is still available as .com then you're laughing otherwise you will have to choose a different extension.
You can have a look here to see if your name is still available:

This is just one of many search engines which can be found by simply entering "domain register" in google ;)"

I'm pretty sure that there are no prerequisites for registering a domain name, other than it being available. :)"

mark said: "Why get a domain name from one company and then host with another?
As long as you are allowed to keep it if you decide to move then you should be sweet. I'm looking around for a host at the moment and can get a free domain when I sign up for a year or two. Seems like a no brainer to me :)"
Darksat said: "I agree with mark, ive done the same, it saves time and hastle generally."
theHostingFinder said: "Yes, letting your web host register the domain can be a good option. Just make sure the domain is registered in YOUR name, not the company's!
I've heard about web hosts refusing to let go of the domain after the customer cancels the service...
