ebay /paypal fraud

tracepeople said: "With it being xmas there must have been a surge of online buying through paypal and ebay - coz 3 people now have contacted me to try and trace ebay fraudsters using paypal!!! Unfortunatly, I can't do a thing as these people know soo little. I just told them to contact ebay/paypal fraud departments and possibly the police. What would you lot do if that happened to you? Assuming you got taken for more than a trivial sum - i.e. $200."

brick said: "unfortunatly, there is nothing you can do. the net is still fairly new. Internet fraudsters are difficult to track."

raven said: "If the fraud was via Ebay, Ebay should be able to help them. Don't they have insurance or something for this type of thing? Or what about Paypal themselves?"

brick said: "paypal don't offer anything. They are just a third party. Ebay may be able to help (sometimes) but just as paypal, ebay is a third party (meaning they don't really care, becuase they can't prevent it)"

raven said: "That sucks."

Danny said: "lol i know this may asound werid but is ur site legal  ebnevr seen a legal site like that"

edwin said: "the companies should shoulder some responsibility for the fraud."

Neutron2k said: "people cant go looking for members of ebay anyway. some guy was arrested for that a while back but he got away with it."

tracepeople said: "I didn't think there was much that could be done. And yes, Danny, my site is 100% legal - I'm a Professional Investigator in the UK."

Neutron2k said: "trace, can you track winnie the pooh down for me? He owes me 5k."

unixk1d said: "Yeah, there is really nothing that can be done with ebay and paypal. Its really unfortunate, but that's the reality with online purchases and online auctions, and that is, you never really know who you are dealing with, cause you never meet face to face or have any form of transaction, since everything is done electronically through the Internet."

tracepeople said: "n2k - someone asked me to trace santa clause!!! :D We had a good few emails to each other about this case, my estimate cost (£1999999999 or somethign like that) and what I'd do (satelight surveillance over the north pole, north pole expidtion, try to track down an elf..hehe). I emailed everyone on my PI discussion group this and they all thought it was pretty funny - a few requested his email address to put in a counter bid :)"

Neutron2k said: "lol i trust you didnt give out his email address? thats a breach of data protection act lol. you should of made him sign a contract and everything lol"

tracepeople said: "of course I didn't, I am registered with the data protection act :)"

Darren said: "This is why shipping product is dangerous. Sticking to distributing an electronic product or service is much better."

Neutron2k said: "im carful on ebay. theres lots of give aways to the fraudsters / 1. never buy from anyone with no or lots of negative feedback. 2. never buy from anyone who has only just started an account and/or has very few sales. a lot of people sale a few things then change accounts to avoid being caught. 3. if your buying somthing expensive, use the reccommended escrow service. its a third party that you both pay. the seller sends the product to them, you send them the money. the escrow service then passes them on at the same time."

unixk1d said: "The most important thing is quality feedbacks, i mean someone could have 1000+ feedbacks, but if they were all from the sales of pictures for $0.01 each, then its likely that he's gonna fraud you. Sometimes its wise to look into what kinds of things he has sold in the past and not just dive straight in, as soon as you see his feedback rating."

tracepeople said: "I usually buy from sellers with good feedback - never with sellers with 0 or negative feedback. IF they've only got 5-10 feedbacks etc then I always send a cheque to get an ADDRESS for them. I never knew about them buying their own $0.01 products to fake a positive feedback - the ba*tards!!!"

edwin said: "i got ripped off twice on ebay!"

raven said: "Did you lose much, Edwin?"

Heather said: "I have never used Ebay to buy or sell products. It never resonated me, I guess."

unixk1d said: "hope it wasn't a lot  ebay/paypal can be so tricky sometimes..."

edwin said: "i lost $400, truth be told. i was very ashamed of myself :)"

raven said: "
I have never used Ebay to buy or sell products. It never resonated me, I guess.
Same here, Brigid."

raven said: "
i lost $400, truth be told. i was very ashamed of myself :)
Live and learn :)"

unixk1d said: "Ouch, did paypal give you any money back? I mean you did file a claim right?
i lost $400, truth be told. i was very ashamed of myself :)
"

Heather said: "
Same here, Brigid.
I'm glad that I'm not alone. ;) They have a good service, but it reminds me of an online flea market. Another place I don't spend time at :)"

tracepeople said: "how did you manage to lose $400 edwin?!!! :("

I intend to start selling something every week, actually I would like to add a few new items every day. My point is only that there are probably a lot of sellers like myself that are new and therefore have no feedback yet."

raven said: "This is true. Every seller on ebay had 0 feedback at one point."

brick said: "
I have to disagree, I have 4 items I'm selling on Ebay right now and since they are the first items I've ever sold and have never purchased anything I have a feedback rating of 0 but I have no intension of defrauding anyone. And usually for me as a general rule if a seller has less that 97% negative rating then i don't buy."

chris3471 said: "This, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4430082682&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1 and a few other things. :D BTW did you mean less than 97% positive?"

brick said: "
This, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4430082682&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1 and a few other things. :D BTW did you mean less than 97% positive?
ya, my bad"

chris3471 said: "
ya, my bad
I figured that was what you meant. :D"

brick said: "wow chris, that toilet your selling is doing really good."

chris3471 said: "Yeah, it's a good deal though, and it's a matching set. I bought 2 sets at a building materials auction and then decided I didn't want a pedestal sink in the upstairs bathroom so I bought a 48" vanity at the same auction. I was going to use the toilet and sell the sink but then I opened the sink to take pictures and decided to sell them as a set, I can get another toilet but as a set they are worth more. After the shipping costs though I just expect to break even unless someone else starts bidding."

unixk1d said: "Hate reserve autions though... :D Nothing against you personally Chris..."

chris3471 said: "
Hate reserve autions though... :D Nothing against you personally Chris...
I am starting to see that some people wont bid on reserve auctions but I can't afford to lose money. If I pay $200 and start the bidding at $0.01 like so many others do and only 1 person bids then I will lose $200."

edwin said: "i hate chris for having a reserve option."

chris3471 said: "
i hate chris for having a reserve option.
Don't hate me I have to have a reserve I can't afford to lose any money right now. :("

Heather said: "You met your reserve! WTG ;)"

chris3471 said: "
You met your reserve! WTG ;)
By the time I pay for shipping I will break even but that's all I was hoping for. :D"

Heather said: "Why doesn't the buyer take care of shipping?"

brick said: "
Don't hate me I have to have a reserve I can't afford to lose any money right now. :(
We wouldn't want to see on the buming for money on the streets, Chris. :D"

Heather said: "He'll no longer have a pot to p*ss in. But he will have a window to throw it out of!"

chris3471 said: "
Why doesn't the buyer take care of shipping?
I only put $50 for shipping but it will actually cost between $70 and $140 depending on where the buyer is located. If it's within 100 miles I will deliver them myself though."

edwin said: "wow, that is too much!"

chris3471 said: "I am going to use greyhound to ship because it's cheaper than ups. Anyone know any cheaper options for shipping in the US?"

raven said: "How much is mule?"

chris3471 said: "Lol funny. :D"

edwin said: "donkeys are cooler than mules."

tracepeople said: "I see what you're saying about every ebay selelr having 0 feedback at one point, but you should at leats buy a few things first to get SOME feedback before you start selling otherwise the first few sales will be VERY tough."

edwin said: "true, its a trust issue"

raven said: "
donkeys are cooler than mules.
Yeah, but don't they eat more?"

edwin said: "nope, less i think"

raven said: "Oh okay. Change that to donkey from mule, Chris."

Heather said: "Or just use a Ford Bronco. Whichever gets you there the fastest. Larger items would definitely have to be PITA for shipping. Especially things like Toilets and sinks."

Musashi said: "Chris , I've spoken to people that say to use USPS. Everyone I"ve talked to say that UPS is a ripoff , especially if you ship to Canada ( ridiculous brokerage fees , as well as whatever customs fees added)."

chris3471 said: "Thanks, I will research them before I ship. Btw where do I go to mule or donkey ship? lol :D Oh the item sold for $280 including the shipping and just my luck it's California, that's as far and expensive as it could be, well Hawaii would have been more actually, ups wants $152 to ship which means I lost $15 but I just wanted to get the items out of my way so I don't mind losing a few dollars and I should get some positive feedback anyway. :D"

chris3471 said: "I Googled Pita but only came up with bread, can you leave me a link please?"

Neutron2k said: ":O pita bread with taramasalta! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"

raven said: "
I Googled Pita but only came up with bread, can you leave me a link please?
LOL I can't tell if you are serious or not. PITA = Pain in the a$$ :)"

chris3471 said: "
LOL I can't tell if you are serious or not. PITA = Pain in the a$$ :)
Oh, I was serious too lol, funny. :D"

tracepeople said: "!!!! WARNING !!!! THIS THREAD HAS GONE COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC  !!!! WARNING !!!!"

Danny said: "yes way off topic LMAO"

edwin said: "this is not the first time."

Neutron2k said: "show me a thread that has stayed on topic lol"

chris3471 said: "Some threads change topic several times."

Heather said: "
I Googled Pita but only came up with bread, can you leave me a link please?
I'm sorry! The PITA shipping company :) LOL!"

Neutron2k said: "theres always one or two terms you can garentee someone hasnt heard before :) wouldnt worry about it chris :)"

chris3471 said: "I'm still laughing about it. :D :D"

Neutron2k said: "this pita thing is like a worm! its spreading throughout the system!"

chris3471 said: "Lol, lets move on then. :D"

rickyjoreturns said: "this is the threade where we all learned about PITA ^_^ That's funny."

chris3471 said: "And you thought it was just bread. :D"

Heather said: "Stuff a pita with some lettuce and grilled veggies and you can call it a sandwich! that's the other pita..the kind N2K was referring.."

raven said: "
theres always one or two terms you can garentee someone hasnt heard before :) wouldnt worry about it chris :)
I think he's more worried about shipping his toilet - cheaply."

edwin said: "drive it there. that would be cheapest"

Heather said: "And you'd know it got there without damage. Is there a way to sell "locally" in EBay? That way if you had larger items to sell, the shipping wouldn't be outrageous.."

Neutron2k said: "i think you can specify no delivery and collection only on ebay :)"

chris3471 said: "You can but it limits the potential buyers, I did find that USPS is way cheaper than UPS. I wish I could get away with shipping it media mail through USPS, it would only cost $60. Well USPS parcel post is about $120 as apposed to $165 from UPS so thanks for telling me Musashi. :D Hey I just did the math and thanks to Musashi I have made $19 profit instead of losing $30-$50."

raven said: "Horray! (Who is Musashi ?)"

Heather said: "Cool beans! Being up some dollars rocks.."

chris3471 said: "
Horray! (Who is Musashi ?)
Musashi http://www.web-mastery.net/showpost.php?p=41354&postcount=58 He only made 1 post, maybe he just joined to help me, if that's the case I'm greatful. :D :D :D :D"
