Any ideas on why the permalink isn't working?

Darren said: "The rewrite doesn't appear to be on at all now. Make sure the web server has write access, so the Wordpress script can automatically update .htaccess. You can also check error_log for error messages."

chris3471 said: "Could you tell me more specifically what I would or where I would look to check for that write access?"

Darren said: "The file called .htaccess should be in the main folder of the Blog and it should be writable. I'm not sure if you're using FTP or not. I'm sure you had the .htaccess before, because the rewrite rules were on."

chris3471 said: "I had changed it back to the default permalink structure until I figured out the problem so I wouldn't be pinging dead links all over the net. I haven't a clue what the problem could be, I can change the name to anything other than bloggeries and it works fine, I've tried deleting the category, I repaired all the tables on the db then remade the category and it still won't work. Oh as for the htaccess it's in the main folder and is chmoded to 0666."

Darren said: "Then go with the easiest solution and just name it something different :)"

chris3471 said: "As long as it doesn't start with blog it will work. Lol I have a blog that doesn't like blogs."

Darren said: "Could be something to do with the main domain name and an excluded directory. I wouldn't lose sleep over it :)"

chris3471 said: "I was thinking along the same line myself."

Darren said: "I've been on this computer for 14 hours now, so I'm feeling less spunky :)"

chris3471 said: "Ha, I spend that much time on the computer everyday. :D"

chris3471 said: "I think I got it figured out now that I have ftp access, it's making the new permalink but it's not deleting the old one. *edit* I'm thinking we have a bad install or some corrupted files or something, the permalinks aren't the only problem, a while ago every link on the site started pointing towards the blog directory homepage and then just as suddenly it went back to normal. Well we've decided to start with a fresh install tomorrow and a new db and a different server, we're not even going to use a backup to restore what's there now, I've copied everything and I'm going to manually do the backup so as not to reinstall the same problem which we've done once already."

chris3471 said: "Ok Re: The edit in my last post, the wheels are in motion, the redirect is done now we're just waiting for it to propogate across the domains. This should take care of the problems."

Darren said: "Good, you think it's all set now? Let's get the basic installation out of the way as fast as we can! I'm thinking of making a development copy of this with all the changes in place. That way if we wanted to start a new blog, we could just install it done."

chris3471 said: "I have been working on that same idea with my forum, I have one done and working that has all the mods installed, I just have to change the quick reply to the one I made myself. It has the attachment mod, a quick reply, google sitemap generator, redirect to disable the flood screen, topics anywhere, and a few others that I can't remember. The only thing I don't like is that it requires 2 install files, 1 for the forum and 1 for the attachment mod, I worry that that may cause some confusion since you can't count on people reading the readme file and the forum install tells you to delete the install directory once you've installed it. Maybe I can change that to a link to the second install script though if I can find where it's at."
