edwin said: "good list man. keep it thorough :)"
chris3471 said: "Yeah I spent about an hour checking and re-checking to make it easier for everyone to get up to date."
Heather said: "Let me get to updating.."
chris3471 said: "Happy I could be of service. :D"
Darren said: "I believe we're up to date now. Thanks for making the list."
chris3471 said: "No problem, it benefits all of us. :D"
Darren said: "When the leprechauns show back up from their benders, they can update too :)
I'm thinking I'll needed to figure out a remote solution this week. Otherwise, this would end up being a huge pain in the arse everytime someone new joins."
chris3471 said: "That's why I made the list, it would be impossible to do though if there were more of us. I think a Javascript code would be the best solution. Either that or a php script that would check a database and add the missing links to blogroll since Javascript isn't search engine frendly."
Darren said: "The easiest solution: I've made a file named menu.php on Blog-Republic.com
Each site uses this instead of the current Blogroll command:

Everytime we need to update, I update once in the main file, and everyone automatically updates. Voila."
chris3471 said: "Isn't that what I just said? So it's safe to add that now and delete the blogroll? Also is it search engine friendly?"
Darren said: "Yeah, it's all set. Get rid of the Blogroll in the Sidebar.php by looking for the get_links_list function and replacing it with this:

"
chris3471 said: "Will other links still work if we add them to links?"
Darren said: "Yeah, it won't affect them. But I wouldn't be planning on doing a lot of sitewide link trading outside of the network."
chris3471 said: "Won't be, just have the my forum and bloggeries homepage linked."
Darren said: "Should be no problem. And I'm glad we did this early on. No way can we update all the time and not make mistakes."
chris3471 said: "Exactly what I was thinking."
chris3471 said: "I edited my first post to send everyone to the post you put the code in."
chris3471 said: "Do I get rid of this line too?
"
Darren said: "You get rid of it and replace it with my version. So chop the two lines and paste in the new ones."
chris3471 said: "My other links are gone now. The ones that weren't in blogroll."
Darren said: "There were only two. Then just add them manually.

Place right below the code you just added."
chris3471 said: "I did it like this instead and then deleted all the blogroll links. People may want to do it like this if they have non-network links and want it to remain easy to edit them. Then just delete the network links from blogroll.
Ok so lets recap for anyone getting here late.
open sidebar.php (it's the one in wp-content/your theme)
Find
It will be like this if you haven't modified the
blog to show the sidebar in single.php
Replace with this

Save it then delete the network links from blogroll and your done"
Darren said: "It isn't working yet is it?"
chris3471 said: "Yeah, it worked instantly.
I just finished doing it to the bloggeries blog, did SMB first."
Darren said: "Alright man. You are almost on a roll :)"
chris3471 said: "Now it's time to write, I find it makes blogging much easier. :D"
Darren said: "Yes, writing makes blogging easier ;)"
chris3471 said: "So what about non-wordpress users? How will we keep them up to date?"
Darren said: "Maybe Darksat can figure out how to do it on Blogger, because an include didn't work."
chris3471 said: "Too bad we can't just get them to all switch to Wordpress."
Darren said: "I just figured I'd have a few on Blogger for SEO purposes (different IP range and domain), but I Blogger does sort of suck. We'd probably want to encourage most people in the network in the future to use Wordpress. Better yet, we can zip up our current version of WP and they could use that. Change the header image, and VOILA, completely configured for Blog Republic."
chris3471 said: "Yes that would be a great idea, at least for new bloggers. Should probably have individually changed files for bloggers that already have their blogs installed though.
*edit* I'm starting to see incoming links on my SMB blog now. 3 so far
*edit 2* the bloggeries blog is not version 2.02, I just can't win, I hate updating wordpress."
Darren said: "The links are going up, each time we post. The Technorati link count for Blog Republic is now at 21. That's pretty decent for starting it Tuesday.
Now we just have to consistently post and get more incoming links."
chris3471 said: "It should pick up 2 more, I just finished my posts for the day. You were right it is very easy writing about what I do, in fact I had to stop myself so I wouldn't wind up with a thousand word post. If you get a chance read the one on my new blog, it really beats the "I haven't had much time lately" post."
Darren said: "Yes, Chris, that's good stuff. One thing: break it into paragraphs so it's more appealing to read.
Your blogs have really come up in the world in the last few days. And don't be afraid to make "filler" posts, like you you did about the review process. The main thing we need early on is consistent posting. Also, think of good titles for both click through and SEO.
But as things are set up right now, we're off and running. The writing part will get easier as we all do it."
Heather said: "I was going to comment, but had to re-register..
I'll be back with a comment when I get the password."
chris3471 said: "Ok it's broke up a little. Filler posts, not a problem.
*edit, Yeah we went with a fresh install after we switched servers so anyone that had registered before will have to do it again. We didn't use the backup so we lost all the previous comments as well."
Darren said: "The filler just sort of keeps an internal dialogue going.
I'm thinking we need several types of posts:
1) Short blurbs and filler
2) Decent length article and a bit more (picture or links)
3) An anchor article that is a top-notch piece that people will link to naturally
The easiest ones to do are the fillers. That way we keep on blogging and pinging and we keep spiders and visitors interested.
The nice thing is we can chronicle the building of a blog network from scratch. We can have the whole story told on BR for anyone to see. And when we succeed, because succeed we shall, we did it from scratch."
chris3471 said: "
And when we succeed, because succeed we shall, we did it from scratch.
Sounds like poetry.:D"
Darren said: "Check out the movie Gladiator. When Gladiator gets trained by the slave owner, he gives him this speech: "And when you die, and die you must, it will be to the sound of clapping"."
chris3471 said: "Seen it, great movie too."
edwin said: ""missing links" makes me think of sasquatch."
chris3471 said: "Looking at you makes me think the same thing!"
quinny said: "i see with this our own links come up on the page too... is that ok?"
Darren said: "Yes, all of our links count too."
