Forum Registration?

Sharky said: "I've been noticing how people other than webmasters have a lot of trouble registering on forums. I remember from when I was learning about websites I found them very hard to use, like when N2K started using snitz (ASP forum) I found it very hard as I was only ever used to running/using PHPBB/VBullitin. I think its time to make a change to all these forums, its a mess at the moment, personally I'm going to start modding my one so its easier. None of these questions like display your email or whats your MSN/ICQ/Yahoo name its stupid and confusing to people who have never heard of ICQ. I thought the main aim of webmasters was to make things simple, what happened to this?"

TeraTree said: "I find it pretty streight forward. If you do not know what ICQ is but do know what AIM or Yahoo is i think most people can figure it out if they were able to find the message board in the first place. May be a good idea to have a stick Welcome thread that outlines what is what if something is a bit off from the standard... (NP$ for instance on the NamePros forum, without doing a search I really dont know what they are or what they are good for)."

Heather said: "Sometimes I wonder if the forums are closed? If they aren't accepting new registrations, that could be part of the problem.."

Neutron2k said: "forum registrations are not a problem in most instances. You can always cut down on the number of fields it takes to register and just ask for the basics - name, email and password. Other fields can be completed by the user account panel. AJAX shouldn't realy be used for registration. It involves too many server calls and you will still need an underlying process for when people don't have Javascript support. Same goes with DHTML registration whereby layers are changed to make it look like AJAX."

marry001 said: "I think those forums already got enough member and they have enough post in their forums. Some forum really had problem with registrastion, but there more forum will not accept new member and there is not a problem."
